For your Sunlight Electric system to provide decades of trouble-free performance, only a few simple maintenance procedures are required.
Maintaining PV Modules
PV modules are solid state, meaning they have no moving parts and require no maintenance beyond cleaning, which can typically done with a garden hose. Most systems should be cleaned 2-4 times a year, concentrated in the drier seasons. Systems in agricultural areas will likely require monthly cleaning and systems that are not cleaned for the duration of the summer will likely experience 5-10% loss of output. That's why Sunlight Electric typically installs a water line to the location of the PV array to facilitate easy cleaning.
Inverters are also solid state and require little to no maintenance beyond regularly checking the cooling fan outlets and cleaning when necessary. Though inverters typically have 10-year warranties, they have a useful life of 15-20 years and therefore will be the first and (likely only) component that requires replacement. The good news is that these devices, in essence boxes with capacitors and computer chips, continue to fall in price and when in need of replacement 15 years from now will likely cost a fraction of today's cost.
Solar mounting hardware is made for outdoor applications from either aluminum, stainless steel, or steel coated for rust-resistance. Though not common knowledge, aluminum does rust slightly, and gets a white powdery finish, but doesn’t continue to oxidize the way steel does, ensuring the solar mounting hardware provides a long-lasting, stable attachment method.
